Gorbel has come full circle this year, stepping out from behind the Honorary Title name and recording two remarkable new discs. His solo sound mines classic soul, traditional folk and Americana, incorporating strings, horns and female backing vocals for a sound more lush and organic than any of his previous work.
The Honorary Title began several years ago as the moniker for Gorbel’s solo folk musings, and later evolved into a full-fledged quartet. The band released their debut, Anything Else But The Truth, in 2004; the album received praise from Rolling Stone and Spin. Their first major-label release, 2007’s Scream and Light Up the Sky, also garnered critical accolades, with Paste Magazine proclaiming that the album was the “under-realized power-pop supergroupâ€â€™s best to date.
With its deceptively simple melodies, warm arrangements and soulful, soaring vocals, Gorbel’s solo material brings the best qualities of The Honorary Title into crisp focus, making the details even more enchanting.
