Doris is one of those magazines that has been around since I first got into the creative zinemaking process. It still stands as a high water mark that I could only wish to aspire to. This issue of Doris represents a reprint of materials from about a decade ago, and while there has been a significant amount of time that has passed, a great deal of the information here still works well. The hand-drawn style of this anti-depression themed issue is very inviting, blending hand-drawn articles with simple (but still compelling) drawings.

Perhaps the best pieces in this issue would have to be the listing of helpful herbs regarding the sub-titled topic (showcasing the use of Peppermint, Damiana, and Gotu Kola among others in alleviating some depression). While the advise to get free medical healthcare (falsifying information or not paying bills) may have worked better in 1999 than 2010, the step by step methods for how to reduce UTI pain is absolutely stellar. The issue goes into personal jags, but these pieces still represent honest efforts to provide information to Doris’ readers. By all means, make sure to pick up this (and any other available) issues of Doris. It acts as a proper blueprint for which other zines should look to build off of.
