Brazilian phenomenon Céu is returning to the US this Spring for the second time since her gorgeous sophomore album Vagarosa was released in July 2009 via Six Degrees Records. The cross-country tour kicks off with two shows in Seattle at the Triple Door on Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13, and includes a performance at Coachella on Friday, April 16, in addition to covering Portland and San Francisco on the West Coast. Céu and her five-piece band will also stop through St. Paul and Chicago, before closing the tour on the East Coast with a show at the Highline Ballroom in New York City on Sunday, April 25.

Céu’s live performances showcase a beautiful blend of samba, reggae, electronica, afrobeat and jazz. She is truly radiant on stage, and captivates her audiences with a laid-back yet mesmerizing disposition, not unlike the wonderfully light nature of her recordings, well-reflected in the title Vagarosa, which translates to ‘slow, easygoing, and leisurely.” As said in the New York Times, “The music on Vagarosa, full of spaced-apart dub grooves and small gestures with deep echoes, lays wide open, and Céu’s band did it justice onstage…It’s international pop, but with strong American affinities…”

Vagarosa, produced by Beto Villares, in addition to producer/engineer Gustavo Lenza and soundtrack producer Gui Amabis, won Céu acclaim on many 2009 year-end lists, from Brazil to the States to the UK (deemed “the finest Brazilian album of the year” by The Guardian). The Grammy/Latin Grammy-nominated singer first captivated music fans across the globe with her self-titled debut album in 2007, for which Céu came to be the first international artist featured in Starbucks’ Hear Music™ Debut series. Since then, she has toured the US four times, with the upcoming dates marking her fifth tour in three years.

Herbie Hancock recently traveled to São Paulo to record a track with Céu (backed by fellow Brazilian musicians Curumin, Lucas Martins and Rodrigo Campos) for The Imagine Project, the jazz icon’s forthcoming international recording and film project, which features over a dozen musical luminaries from all over the globe, including Anoushka Shankar, Seal, Dave Matthews, Chaka Khan, The Chieftans, Jeff Beck and more.

Céu was also handpicked for the Starbucks’ Sweetheart 2010 compilation, which features her recording of Tim Maia’s “Eu Amo Você,” alongside artists including Jose Gonzalez, Spoon and The Avett Brothers. “Bubuia,” one of the standout tracks on Vagarosa, has been placed on the Voto Latino iTunes compilation, as well as Decibel Magazine’s Record Store Day 2010 CD Sampler.

Céu’s representation of Brazilian music on Herbie Hancock’s The Imagine Project and her presence on the Coachella line-up further reinforce her status as Brazil’s leading lady in 2010.
