The most direct and deliberate offering on Via Tania’s sophomore album Moon Sweet Moon is the transfixing track “Fields.” Tania’s glassy vocal lines float over cascading flourishes of organic instrumentation, inciting an overwhelming sense of movement, propulsion and dislocation — forging a truly unique sonic space between a modern day Billie Holiday and lateral musical storyteller Suzanne Vega, “Fields” hints at new frontiers for Tania.

“I just wanted to change things up a bit,” Tania explains, “and I wanted to have extremely simple lyrics but very visual. I don’t write too many pop songs, so now I am going to keep trying to throw more out there. It’s a fun one to play.”

Tania’s Moon Sweet Moon assembles recording sessions as far flung as the South of France, to Iceland and Australia. The final sessions that brought the album together were recorded in Austin, Texas, with renowned local producer Craig Ross. Nominated for a Grammy Award for his production work with Patty Griffin, Craig has also worked with many other bands including Daniel Johnston, Red House Painters and Juliana Hatfield – to name a few. Guest musicians on the album include members of Tortoise, Ground Components, El May and Austin’s own Shearwater.

The visual accompaniment to Fields comes courtesy of Australian-based video mavericks Moop Jaw. Having recently created waves with their videos for Animal Collective, Neon Indian, Peaches and The Golden Filter, they’ve shot Tania on location in and around the spectacular highland settings of Australia’s Mount Buller.

The driving pulse of Fields will also lend itself to new remix interpretations from the likes of DFA’s The Juan Maclean (“I reworked this deeper and deeper into a deep house 4am banger” he says), an epic sonic travelogue from Modular’s KIM (from The Presets) and a kaleidoscopic glitch and paste version from Lemonade.

Accolades for Via Tania and Moon Sweet Moon portend to an exciting 2010. “Fields” and remixes will be available in April. Stay tuned.
