It is true that Oceanic fits well with the sound that Isis puts on this disc. For “Weight”, done by Fennesz gives listeners a sense of being by a sea. This sea sound, created by white noise, is one of the better emulations of nature. This compilation of “reinterpretations” is interesting to say the least. While Fennesz has a very solemn and sedate sound dominating their track, Ayal Naor creates unapologetic death metal. The mixture of ambient, noise and metal really never comes up together but this compilation really allows the similarities of the genres to show. This is much more important than the re-interpretation of differing songs, and really paves the way for greater work between these styles of music in the future. The only thing that holds the disc back from being even more effectual has to be the extreme song length on each disc. Running at about seven minutes a composition, much of the intensity created by the discs’ tracks is dissipated. There is some serious star power on this disc, but perhaps the only track that really has the immediacy and drive necessary to motivate listeners is the track ending the first disc, Mike Patton’s “Maritime”, a Middle Eastern-influenced jaunt through a speed-freaks eyes.

Top Tracks: Maritime (Mike Patton), Weight (Fennesz)
