Q:What’s your story? How did you become Kamileon?

First off I would like to thank Neufutur Magazine for giving me this opportunity. It’s an honor! Originally back in early 2000 I use to practice djing at a music store out in Tri County. My friend Charles told me about the store and that’s how I started djing. I thought djing was the path for me at first but things turned out different.

At the time I didn’t have the money to buy a turn table. But around early 2005 my friend Kareem “Karyzma” told me of a beat making program which I could use to make beats.

From there that’s when the magic began. It was in June 2005 when I made my first beat, Jungle Extraction. I made like 4 or 5 beats afterwards and decided that I needed to come up with a name. I needed a name that would fit my description of music…a name that would describe my character as an artist…a name that would change my life…forever.

And so….I chose the name “Kamileon”…inspired by previous experiences, relationships with ex girlfriends, troubled times, bright and dark emotions, and other influences in my life.

The name “Kamileon” didn’t dawn on me until I made songs like “Last Time”, “7 Bridges”, “Make You Feel You’re Right There”, “All Night”, and a handful of other beats.

And that’s how I became…Kamileon.

Q:What artists or performers are you listening to right now?

I haven’t tuned into music recently like I used to a couple of years ago. But I have noticed a couple of songs like “Unthinkable” by Alicia Keys feat. Drake, “Pronto” by Snoop Dogg feat. Soulja Boy, “Paralyzer” by Finger 11, and a few others.

Q:What styles of music and overall approaches do you feel will be big in the next year?

Next year I believe the music industry is going to aim for more electronic/modern sounds. As you can see 2009 was a big year for auto tune. It was nothing new but a majority of music genres started using it. The first time I heard auto tune was in a song called “Take Away” by Missy Elliot feat. Ginuwine & Twee.

I feel that auto-tune is overused in some ways but it may open doors for future musical trends. Who knows, the next big thing may be “auto-beat” or “auto-program” something.

Q:What are you looking to accomplish when you create music, and how does the music relate to the artistic side of things?

When I create music I’m looking to capture the feeling and moment of when I make music. It’s like a spontaneous reaction. The music I make captures deep thoughts and subliminal emotions I have locked up inside. The artistic side is that my music conveys a side to me that I never knew.

Q:You began working under the Kamileon name back in 2000; what changes have you noticed in the last decade in terms of mixing and production technology?

The most noticeable change from 2000 and up is that music today seems more business-oriented than personal-oriented. Mixing and production technology have improved over the years but 50 years from now which songs will capture the highlight of the early 2000’s? It’s ok to have modern technology, new mixing skills and stuff but what good is it if it doesn’t leave a legacy? I can mention a few songs that have the possibility in leaving a legacy for the 2000’s. But when speaking in terms of like Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, those artists have already captured their period and moment in music.

Now it’s time for our generation to capture our moment in music. When topics come up about the 80’s or 90’s, people mention “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind, & Fire, etc. But when people mention 2005, 07, or 2010 what will they say? Hopefully it will be me.

Q: Related to the last question, what programs do you use to create your beats and music generally?

I’ve tried a handful of programs when I make beats. But the main programs I use are FL Studio, Mixcraft, and Magix Music Maker.

Q: How does college interact (either positively or negatively) with your creative process?

Ha, I would have to say more negative than positive. It’s hard to make creative beats when you have people throwing stink bombs in the dorm room hall, fire alarms intentionally set off, sub woofers cranked at full blast 2 dorm rooms down, hearing “action” going on with two couples next door, or walking in the bathroom to find out that someone shitted in the sink. I mean I love college and all, and it’s a great experience. But when it comes to music production I can’t be having distractions that!

What I would do was go upstairs to the lounge room to make my music. On Friday nights my friend Rod and I, along with some dorm room buddies, would be in the lounge room freestylin on my Xbox. Good times…

Q: In a similar vein, are drugs/alcohol/recreational drugs good or bad in your opinion when creating beats?

Without a doubt, bad. I couldn’t imagine a top music producer like Timbaland being doped up on oxycotins, and then making a top seller song like “Apologize” with One Republic. It’s ok to have your drinks and smokes, but when it comes to creating beats, mixing the two together could misconstrue the outcome of a song. I’ll put it this way, there’s a time and place for everything.

Q:How have you gotten more of your fans – Myspace or traditional word of mouth? Have you noticed anything different between these types of fans?

Most of my fans come from Myspace. I’ve tried word of mouth but the internet is more effective for me. The difference between my fans is that my online fans give me more feedback than fans from the street. Hopefully when I’m well known it will balance out.

Q:What levels of success would you need to attain before you can honestly say that you’ve “made it”?

Before I can say that I’ve made it I would have to have captured a worldwide audience. I would have to set a legacy that defines my time like previous musical legends. I would like to have my music blasted on countless radio shows, movies, films, plays, concerts, high school tournaments, college events, nba games, the nfl superbowl, and so forth. And if I’m nominated for “Artist of the Decade” or “Artist of the Century” then I’ll kick back and say….I made it.

Q:Either after you’ve broken big or are an up and coming star, what artists or performers are out there right now that you would like to collaborate with?

Man that is one hefty request! If I could I would like to collaborate with artists like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Finger 11, Breaking Benjamin, Ice Cube, Nas, Swollen Members, and many more. I welcome all opportunities for collaboration.

Q:How should people find your music? Are there any other releases coming out that they should look into buying?

Right now the best way to find my music is online. My web-pages are myspace.com/kamileon1, imradio.com/kamileon, ourstage.com/profile/kamileon, & mymusicsite.com/kamileon. From there people can find out the scoop of what’s going on with my music.

Q:What else would you like to say?

First and foremost I would like to thank God for giving me the skill to produce music. Second I would like to thank my family, friends, fans, and fans to be. Third I would to thank Mymusicsite.com for doing a national blast of my music across the United States, Canada, & Europe. And last but not least I would like to thank Neufutur Magazine for this interview. Much appreciated!
