There are a number of different films that have mashed together the corpus of a specific genre. The Wayans Brothers have literally made a career of it, and The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall And Felt Superbad About It looks to be a film that improves on the spoof films that preceded it. While obvious from the film’s title, this Craig Moss production is a sex-charged romp through the space created by The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Sarah Marshall, and Superbad. While there are nods present to other, non-related films (Twilight, for example), the storyline contains just enough comedy over its 82 minutes to keep viewers interested.
The film’s video quality is superb, with a crispness of pictures to really bring across some of the more hidden and nuanced jokes and humor that Moss inserts. Similarly, the audio does not let one down, allowing for everything to be heard without having to reward the DVD. While some actors – such as Austin Michael Scott – may not be too well known to movie-viewing audiences, eir performance as McAnalovin’ showcases some chops that will serve eir well in any other genre comedies.
Even when an actor like Bryan Christopher Cullen (Andy) has had some significant experience in front of a camera (as one of the initial MadTV crew), there is no sense that Cullen takes eir role as anything less than serious. Where the film itself may be a guilty pleasure, everyone gives their all and surpasses the quality that is typically present with parody genre movies. Here’s to hoping that all associated with The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall And Felt Superbad About It provide viewers with their take on Inception or Salt in the years to come.
