With their aptly titled new release “Good Shepherd”, The Niceguys showoff their musical prowess as they literally and figuratively prove themselves as leaders in the scene of burgeoning young hip-hop artists. With witty and discerning lyrics, Yves Saint, rapper and one-fourth of the Houston-based group, alludes to his pioneering position among the flock of less talented rappers with clever lyrics. “I never sheared ya brother/ And covered your face, appears that I love ya,” raps Yves, remarking that the lyric holds special meaning in context to the song’s title. “The subtleties are important here. It’s saying that as sheep I will not pull the wool over your eyes, but still look at you as equals who’s intelligence I will not insult.”

For Yves, the song is somewhat a fulfillment of unforeseen prophecy. “I didn’t know I was going to be a rapper,” says Yves, while likening his position to that of a benevolent leader. “I never had the same agenda as others. I realized this was a gift, and this is me responding dutifully as ‘The Good Shepherd”. While Yves does admit, “Leaders aren’t always going to be perfect”, his skills on display are unsurpassed and prove that, “The best leaders are often not the ones looking for the job.”
