Collections of Colonies of Bees, the long-running, Milwaukee-based project of guitarist Chris Rosenau, is the newest member of the Hometapes recording family. The group will release its next album, GIVING — the much-anticipated follow up to 2008’s critically-praised Birds — via the Portland-based independent record label in early 2011. Together with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, the members of Collections of Colonies of Bees also make up the group Volcano Choir.

Discussing the excellent fit between Collections of Colonies of Bees and Hometapes, bandleader Chris Rosenau indicates that the band “has been and will always be, since it began in 1998, about working with friends. We have known Adam and Sara from Hometapes for years now, and have always been very good friends. We are also great friends with most of the bands on the label. Basically, there is no better home for our new record.”

Collections of Colonies of Bees toured Japan once previously, in early 2008, and anxiously returns to a region Rosenau refers to as home of “the best tour experience in Bees’ history.” Check out a preview of what that lucky island will get to behold this week: a clip from Volcano Choir rehearsal.

For the rest of the world, Hometapes is releasing something to have and to hold: a limited edition Collections of Colonies of Bees t-shirt. Printed in three colors on a fancy 50/50 tee, it’s available today from the Hometapes Art & Utility Store.
