“Nerd’s Eye View will likely be remembered as one of the definitive Bay Area albums of the post-Hyphy era…Not only is it the best debut album since Mistah F.A.B.’s Son of a Pimp, but it might just change perceptions of Bay Area rappers: namely, that they can’t make hit songs.” – Oakland Local.

The Song:

Erk Tha Jerk has received major radio spins, amassed hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, has had a video in rotation on MTV2, and has performed around the country – all without a debut album in stores. No longer, as today marks the release of Nerd’s Eye View, the long-awaited debut release from the self-proclaimed Hood Nerd. To celebrate the album, Erk is releasing, “Reach The Top” featuring J. Myers, a track that offers insight and triumphant proclamations from an artist both reaching a new career plateau and striving harder still to continue on an upward progression.

“I wanted people to hear a detailed description of my story,” says Erk, who also produces and directs his own videos. “Where I came from – not the streets, but growing up as a kid; what the neighborhood looked like and how that helped shape me.” Producer Invasion provides the Richmond, California rapper with a wonderfully soulful backdrop to tell that story, as Erk raps lines like, “I am straight from the bottom/ The struggle, it’s not a problem/ New Jordan’s, I never got ’em/ My momma couldn’t afford ’em/ My father was talking mortgage/ 16, I started wilding,” and “Knew I was gonna shine even when my girl didn’t/ And look y’all, it’s happening just like Gerald said it/ So to my city, I’m just trying to put you on,” giving listeners a chance to view the world through Erk’s signature wide rimmed glasses.

The Background:

Debunking the stereotype of what a West Coast rapper should be is what got a very fickle hip-hop audience to initially notice Erk. His streetwear heavy fashion sense, trademark black eyeglasses and hood nerd persona all worked in his favor. Being from a “bad place” yet knowing that there are non-hood things out there is what has shaped Erk’s approach to life and music. “I went to college for a couple years, I’ve worked 9 to 5 jobs and I’ve sold weed and none of those things quite worked out so I’m kinda like a hood nerd.” His satirical anti-hyphy anthem “I’m So Dumb” and “Plane in the Air” featuring Too $hort defined him as an artist but it was 2009’s “Right Here” that put him on the map. The censored version became one of 106 KMEL’s (San Francisco) most played songs, charted on Billboard’s Top 100 Hip Hop/R&B, and the video is currently in rotation on MTV Jams. In addition to producing and directing videos for other artists, Erk is currently working on his first full length album titled Nerd’s Eye View.
