A quick note before the review truly begins – there are a number of different releases that fans of Transatlantic can sink their teeth into. While we are reviewing the 2 DVD version, fans of audio can pick up a 3 CD version and those that wish to have both can pick up a bundled package. Saying that, we were lucky enough to have over five hours of footage from this storied progressive band.

Whirlwind Tour 2010 was filmed in May of 2010, tying together the four core members of the band (Roine Stolt, Mike Portnoy, Pete Trewavas, and Neal Morse) with Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation) guesting on the keyboards and guitar. Transatlantic goes beyond playing live in support of an album, deciding rather to recreate the entire disc. With absolutely lush camera production, Whirlwind Tour 2010 ensures that viewers will see all the most important riffs, drum solos, and other instrumental arrangements. While the band has no problem coming forth with enough in the way of material for an eighty-minute composition like “The Whirlwind”, kudos has to be given to the camera crew here. Where it seems like many live recordings become repetitious after some small time, there is a vibrant feel that gives viewers some semblance of actually being at the concert.

There was something special in the air at the High Voltage Festival, and nowhere is this heard as well as during their cover of the Genesis classic, “Return of the Giant Hogweed”. Steve Hacket’s guest spot on this track makes for a tremendous end to one of the best live performances that we have heard. Transatlantic is an act that can bring all of the fire and fury to whatever medium they may be in, whether studio, live, or even on video.

Top Tracks: We All Need Some Light, Return of the Giant Hogweed
