I absolutely love when there is a good remaster or reissue of a forgotten disc. Sundazed’s 2011 version of the Blues Magoos 1966 classic is without fault. A quick glance of this 1,000-print limited edition disc showcases absolutely brilliant and vibrant cover art, while sticking the album into one’s player will show a similarly intense quality. This is due to the fact that Sundazed has procured the Mercury master reels, creating a reissue that is as close to what the band put down as possible.

For those that did not know the band, the Blues Magoos were a Bronx-located band that released five albums in as many years, taking a twenty-eight year hiatus. Psychedelic Lollipop was the band’s first album, spawning two hits – “(We Ain’t Got) Nothin’ Yet” and “One By One”. While each of these tracks are catchy bits of psychedelic rock, I feel that the band really crafted an album that worked well from beginning to end. The sixties were a period in which practically any set of individuals could strap on instruments and chart with seemingly any random effort, but the Blues Magoos were able to make intelligent and cogent efforts on “Psychedelic Lollipop”. This has the effect of ensuring that listeners will have tracks like “Worried Life Blues” and “She’s Coming Home” bouncing around their heads long after the disc spins to a close.

Sundazed is a record label that can give a classic like “Psychedelic Lollipop” the love that it needs at a solid price, without compromising quality or pricing it beyond the means of collectors. If you were a fan of the band or just want to expand your horizons when it comes to psychedelic or garage rock, make it a point to pick up their reissue of the Blues Magoos’ “Psychedelic Lollipop”.
