While You Can (Not) Advance is a middle film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, the story is pretty well contained here. While it would be much easier for viewers just to catch up with the previous film, You Can (Not) Advance fills in fans and gets things started all within the first ten minutes of the film. Mari Illustrious Makinami, the new Evangelion pilot, immediately dispatches the Third Angel through the self-destruct feature of the Unit-05.

From there, the Tenth Angel begins raining death and destruction through the city, beating up Mari and finally being quashed only through the work of Rei’s ace fighting using the Unit-00. After this, an absolutely amazing post-credits scene rolls that just has to be watched to fully understand. With what happens there, there is little doubt in my mind that the action present in You Can (Not) Advance’s sequel will be some of the most amazing that has ever taken place in an NGE-based flick.

There are a large number of featurettes here; the original trailer gives viewers some semblance of what a Japanese audience looked for when it comes to the film, while different TV spots fill in that conception a little further. However, the omitted scenes are perhaps the best inclusion in this DVD (and Blu-Ray) set; they are able to give viewers that extra information that would normally be missed by only watching the feature presentation. Keep an eye out on the rest of the films in the Rebuild of Evangelion series; the same high-intensity action that is commonplace here will undoubtedly be ratcheted up to 11 with each subsequent film.
