This is the opening coverage that we have written for our computing section, so I have to apologize in advance if there are any kinks in it.

Saying that, we received a 3 terabyte version of the Deskstar, a hard drive which for many represents the upper boundary of entry-level hard drives available to consumers. Despite its size, it maintains a price point that is eminently approachable (many online retailers price the 7K3000 at around $250). This SATA drive has quick data access (7200 rpm) and will serve users for a considerably longer time than many comparable drives on the market. Owing to a rating of 2 million hours before failing, purchasing an Deskstar 7K3000 will get users plush in terms of data for a number of months to come.

Installation is easy, as well – users have to merely crack open their computer case, find an open 3.5” bay, screw and plug in, and their OS should do most of the rest of the work. We had to wait about an hour for our test rig to format the hard drive, but this represented the only drawback that we could see with the 7K3000. The Deskstar 7K3000 also represents an additional way for users to stay green – the HDD uses considerably less power than similar models, and uses less than a watt of power when it is in a standby mode. Even when the hard drive is still active, the 7K3000 is able to cut off about 55-60% of the normal power consumption present in other brands’ hard drives.

At a perfect price point, reliability, and overall quality, the availability of the Deskstar 7K3000 will undoubtedly be limited for a good, long while. While still flush with funds (taxes and summer disbursements), I cannot think of a better and more intelligent buy than this hard drive.

Rating: 9.5/10
