A robotic amalgamation of disco, funk, electro and punk influences, LA-based Short Circuit’s debut EP, Late Night Drive, will be released digitally worldwide this Monday, May 23 on Binary Entertainment (Keenhouse, Fabian, The Kids Are Radioactive).
The brainchild and solo vehicle of LA electronic musician Andrew Verner, Short Circuit creates music that is equally made for night driving as it is for the dance floor. The son of a small record label manager, Verner was raised around guitars, keyboards, and a turnstile of talented songwriters. On his debut, he draws inspiration from those times by placing genuine songwriting within the context of the electro world of sequencers and vintage synthesizers.
The album’s first single, “How We Speak,” exemplifies Short Circuit’s modus operandi: vocoded vocals, melodic singing, flourishes of interlacing synths, handclaps and a disco beat combines with earnest and heartfelt songwriting, creating a song about heartbreak that straddles both the world of the club and the world you have to come to afterwards.
Short Circuit has been building up a loyal following with his engaging performances around Los Angeles. His live show is a unique blend of live DJing of original material played alongside live synths, vocals, and a variety of percussion. The end result is something like a robot disco with the live energy of a rock show. On the heels of a sweat-inducing gig at Santa Monica’s weekly dance party, Versus, he will perform at The Dragonfly in Hollywood on Monday, June 13.
Binary is a label, management company and popular blog that has earned international recognition for promoting a unique emerging genre they have coined “dreamwave.” NME exclaimed: “Chillwave has a riptide, and its name is dreamwave. Swimming against the current of downbeat glo-fi dance music, LA’s Binary Entertainment offer up bleary-eyed bangers for somnambulistic ravers.” While not a sound they created, the melodic, nostalgiic retro-futuristic sounds of dreamwave encompasses what each Binary artist strives to accomplish: it aims to capture the essence of LA, from the sun-kissed waves of the Pacific Ocean to the palm tree-lined streets of Hollywood and the neon and grit of the downtown cityscape.
