Following the success of Drums & Ammo’s album Vol. 1, REL has decided to keep riding the wave of momentum, releasing his debut solo instrumental project Out Of View. The album was produced during a year in which REL has found himself busier than ever. “2011 is my most ambitious year ever,” explains the true multi-talent. “Between Distortion 2 Static, Roy Ayers Project, SWTBRDS, MVMNT, and now my journey as a solo artist; I’m taking – and feel like I’m making – huge strides.”

While REL has long been an accomplished hip-hop producer, his style has also spanned a variety of genres, with his far reaching diversity shining not only on the Drums & Ammo album, but also with MVMNT, a collaborative album with Bay rapper J Billion that earned the producer comparisons to Flying Lotus, Toro Y Moi, and a host of other boundary-pushing instrumentalists. And like those artists, REL is in control of his full artistic vision, something that comes across immediately with “On My Way,” the debut single and video from his forthcoming solo album. “I directed, shot, and edited the video,” explains REL. “This album is special to me because for the first time I get to showcase all my talents in one project without having to compromise anything.”

The video for “On My Way” is a flowing, artfully time-lapsed tour of San Francisco that fits perfectly with the tracks filtered and ambient vocal chops and collection of sounds. Images of palm trees and skyscrapers mesh into each other, the city seemingly gliding by. “The challenge is in relaying the messages I intended, and doing it without words,” explains REL. “I’m capturing emotions and feelings within everything I’m doing.”
