Transformers: Dark of the Moon is one of the summer’s biggest films. It only makes sense that there would be a video game that was released to capitalize on its success. However, the game is strong and represents a title that will be in my PS3 for months to come. This is because the title looks to flip genre convention on its head, all while providing players with a fun and immersive experience into the Transformers world. The video game bases itself around the shooter genre, but there are considerable customization elements to one’s Transformer that provides more than a passing RPG feel to the title.

Finally, the strategy that can be involved in dispatching one’s enemies allows for a bit more brainpower to be used than would normally be present in a shooter title. All of these gameplay elements are tied together with an intuitive control system that is simple enough for the younger set to play but is challenging enough to take a number of plays to properly master. The seven chapters of Transformers: Dark of the Moon give players the opportunity to assume the mantle of a number of their favorite robots, all which contain different skills and abilities.

The different transformation aspects of these characters also provide players with a different tone and tempo to the title. Whether flying, walking, or killing, everything has been rendered in bleeding-edge graphics. Without any slowdown to speak of or even drawbacks that can be found in regards to the gameplay or graphics of the title, Transformers: Dark of the Moon should be seen as one of the few titles this summer that should be bought, no questions asked. Check out Activision’s slate through the rest of 2011 for some other titles in this vein.
