Shows that are set in antiquity typically do pretty well; one just has to remember back to the 1960s just to see exactly how well Cleopatra did in theatres. This trend has continued into the current period as well; Rome and Gladiator both have or had huge fanbases. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a show that blends together all three of these releases, and does it in a fashion that even Frank Miller (300) would be proud of. Intrigue, blood, and a tremendous amount of action immediately greet viewers from the first minutes of the introductory episode of the show.

Anchor Bay has released a Blu-Ray and DVD set of the first season of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, ensuring that whenever the show comes back, viewers will be caught up. Along with capturing the different story arcs, this DVD set contains a large number of bonus features to sink ones teeth into. This means that there are different extended versions of scenes along with alternative takes on the show’s ending, while the bloopers will insert an interesting bit of humor into the mix. Different featurettes also present the history behind the weapons, bring viewers into the mix with Lucy Lawless, and showcase the material that was unable to be shown on cable television.

What results in the season one DVD of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a great buy, one that anyone that finds Roman history or drama interesting should seriously look into buying this set as well as keeping up to date with Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Vengeance should be hitting televisions here at the beginning of the new year, so don’t fret – there is more than enough blood and gore to be had until then.
