Super Hybrid is the perfect time of mindless horror that will be perfect as a popcorn flick whenever it starts getting cold. This is not to say that this film is bad – rather, it has a must see style that will have viewers at the edges of their seats throughout the entirety of the flick. Super Hybrid seems to be a revamp of the classic Christine, but there are some significant differences that make this film slightly better. Aside from being filmed in the current period, there is a careful guarding of the transformation aspect of the car.
Rather than have the title move into a Sailor Moon or Final Fantasy thing that puts an inordinate amount of focus on the change, the film decides rather to ratchet up the intensity. When it comes time to see exactly why the car has become such a menace, viewers will be chomping at the bit. The title may not have had a huge Hollywood budget, but Super Hybrid succeeds in creating a dramatic thriller that will stand up to repeat viewing. The cast and crew all work together to make this a film that needs to get more love; I have a feeling that it will become a cult classic just as soon as more viewers get the chance to pick it up.
If you like thrillers that are able to interject a grim reality rather than a gofy one, then I would have to point towards the Blu-Ray release of Super Hybrid. The lack of gratuitous sex or violence beyond the main plot is similarly smart and makes this film stand on its own merits. I may not watch many films, but I believe that Super Hybrid is one of the best of the year.
