I believe that few individuals that do not live in the Lake District will have any idea about what it is or how beautiful that it may be without watching this edition of Wainwright Walks. For those that have not watched this collection, the Lake District is nestled in the northwest corner of England, and Julia Bradbury provides tremendous amounts of knowledge as the host for this set. A panoply of different locales are shown during Wainwright Walks – Blencathra, Helm Crag, Helvellyn, and Catbells are all given a proper treatment here.

This 3 DVD set has a slow pace, but I believe that this is a good thing. Rather than rattling through a whole host of different places and things to do, Bradbury allows the beauty of the region to shine through properly. The more leisurely pace of this DVD is something that should be copied for any travelogue or documentary that looks to focus on natural beauty. While I do not believe that I will ever make it out to the Lake District, the amount of footage that is given to this region makes it seem as if I was already there.

This DVD set should be purchased by anyone that wishes to get a better appreciation for the English countryside, or who may be taking a trip there in the next few years. Here’s to hoping that BFS continues to release documentaries in this vein – the video and audio quality are stellar, creating a fully immersive aspect to a genre of television that seems often to be particularly dry. Wainwright Walks – Lake District is simply the top of the heap, as far as I am concerned – buy it at your well-stocked local video store.
