There are a number of different releases that we receive on a daily basis, but there are few that we have viewed that look to change what it means to see an actor. Jackie Chan, at least on this side of the world, has been seen to be little more than an action hero. 1911 Revolution is the first film that we have seen in which ey attempts to provide viewers with a decidedly different role. In this film, Chan plays Huang Xing, a member of the Chinese ruling dynasty.

Where Xing has been able to see the world, eir China has gradually fallen to war and strife. It is up to Xing to fix the problems that have led to this sad state, all while ensuring that ey does not get killed. Chan’s performance here is absolutely stellar, and the cast that ey surrounds eirself with (Bing Bing Lee, Winston Chao, and Jaycee Chan) further pushes eir acting into the stratosphere. One is simply unable to find a better possible role for Chan, and the care that was taken in making this a historically accurate film is stunning.

One feels as if they are transported back to 1911, and the political intrigue that fuels this film will have viewers sitting at the edges of their seats. I must admit that I was unfamiliar with early twentieth century Chinese history, but 1911 Revolution is so interesting that I may have to go to Wikipedia or crack open a history book. Make sure to pick up 1911 Revolution if you have any desire to see a storied actor completely change eir style and succeed fully. I know that I’ll be watching this again.
