The whole-hog restoration and placement of older films onto the Blu-Ray format is great. It allows different resources to be tapped, while giving viewers a take on the film that is utterly and completely new. Synapse Films has released this 1989 Scott Spiegel title, with luminaries such as Quentin Tarantino and Lawrence Bender tapped to provide this vision. A cast of stars (Bruce Campbell, Renee Estevez, and Sam Raimi) all are present.
Intruder focuses on the deaths of a night crew at a supermarket. With each member of the stocking team dying, one has to wonder about the who and why – who is doing this and for what reason are they committing these murders? The different methods of death are all interesting and showcase a proper blend of reality and gore. Intruder is a film for those that like their horror movies over the top. While not as serious as Saw, one can see exactly how important Intruder is in influencing the current generation of horror films. This Blu-Ray shines from the amount of work that Synapse has placed into it, as well as the sheer amount of work that originally went into it.
There are a huge amount of additional features that are present on this release. The commentary between Spiegel and Bender allow viewers to see the vocal points of the film as the key players wanted them to be seen, while the footage for the different auditions for the film’s cast showcase a human side to a large set of actors. I personally liked how the workprint was able to be cleaned up and salvaged for the extension of the different murders, while the stills gallery give buyers a wide selection of pictures to place on their home window.
