Who would have imagined that a drama set in a medieval fantasy world would have any appeal beyond the Lord of the Rings obsessive’s and those guys playing Magic in the back of the comic book store.
Based on a series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin, the series, quite possible the best thing to come out of HBO in over a decade (and yes, I know about The Wire and The Sopranos, etc.) Game of Thrones focuses on the Stark family, led by patriarch Lord Ned Stark, King Robert Baratheon’s best friend and loyal protector. The king’s second wife, Queen Cersei Lannister along with her brothers and son – all the epitome of shifty – come to stay with the Stark family.
Add in other monarchies and clans in different states of dysfunction across the globe (I’m a little vague on the geography of this fantasy world); plenty of sex, violence and incest and you can’t help but get drawn into the show. The fact that they kill off such a likeable, main character in the first season is pretty much a warning that the writers are willing to ignore the traditional rules of TV. Absolutely addictive.
