Few artists are able to convey their essence with a single. Gary “G” Jenkins, known previously from his work in Silk, is able to do so with I Love. I Love begins with an emotive piano roll, punctuated with percussion. When Jenkins’ vocals begin to rise and fall, one gains a sense of the gravity the track possesses.
The track succeeds in a number of ways. Listeners will be led through numerous genres and styles, as Jenkins touches upon R&B, soul, and even blues before the track ends. I Love establishes Jenkins as a performer that can hang just as well in the current as he did during his stint in Silk. Finally, the song provides long-time listeners with a tremendous multi-part harmony. I like I Love because it allows Jenkins to set the tempo and overall feel of the track with nothing more than his vocals; this conveys his talent and overall virtuosity perfectly.
While the production of a track typically does little beyond tiding it up, I feel that the production here pushes the track from great to epic. Rather than sputtering out or gradually spinning to an end, I Love goes for the gusto. With every side of the track (vocals, piano, and other instrumentation) pushed to their maximum, listeners will be absolutely floored at what is issuing forth. This track is an evolution from what Jenkins has previously released, and is stronger than even 1996’s Don’t Rush or 2004’s Side Show.
