It is typically not NeuFutur’s policy to review albums so far in advance, but the Monks of Mellonwah’s latest EP, Neurogenesis, is that solid of a title. This Australian act is helped through the inclusion of producer Jeff Bova in terms of how the finished product sounds, but the heart and soul of the band is what makes Neurogenesis so delectable.

The Monks of Mellonwah are able to provide their listeners with considerable philosophical deepness on each of these cuts, touching upon the indomitability of the human spirit and the splitting apart of the most basic level of existence. By couching these thoughts into an alt-rock sound that ranges between Incubus, Desert City Soundtrack, and Coldplay, the Monks of Mellonwah can inspire and even educate a typically apathetic listener base.

Neverending Spirit is a high point on the Neurogenesis EP, as the instrumental and vocal sides push on each other; what results on this track is decidedly stronger than its constituent parts. While not possessing the metal influences or heaviness of an act like Tool, I feel that the Monks of Mellonwah nevertheless possess a similar dedication to their fans. Listeners will have to listen to Kyoto a number of times before they have found every little bit of what the Monks have placed here. Even when the band comes forth with a catchy hook or sing-a-long chorus, this deepness and layered approach can be found. I have little doubt in my mind that the band will be able to continually evolve and inspire their fans. Neurogenesis is but an introduction; I would love to hear what the rest of the story portends for the band.
