Los Angeles based duo speakers fuse elements of dance, R&B, hip-hop and electronic pop, to craft their own unique sound on their debut EP New Frequency to be released exclusively on iTunes on May 8. On the four-track EP (released by Virgin Records in conjunction with independent label Newco, where the duo were first discovered by Troy Carter and Matt Michelsen), singer/rapper/lyricist Keon B and musician/producer Blair Taylor fuse genres and deliver hyper-experimental party jams like “Bass” and the funked-up instant classic “And Her Too.”

New Frequency also features guest appearances from Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes on “Runnin’ It,” an old-school-spirited anthem backed by a futuristic groove and songstress NiRé All’Dai on “Right Right,” a super-slick, club-ready banger.

speakers is the genre-warping product of many years of musical adventuring on the part of Keon and Blair (both 21-years-old). As a big-time Beatles/Prince fan growing up in small-town Georgia, Keon began writing songs for his church choir as a boy-then completely threw himself into music after the murder of a beloved aunt who’d long supported his music dreams. Four years later, at age 17, Keon moved to New Orleans to pursue his singing/rapping/songwriting career and eventually got wind of a young, intensely talented producer named Blair Taylor.

In high demand, Blair (who’d attended the Grammy Foundation’s Grammy Camp on full scholarship after his family lost their home in Hurricane Katrina) waited a year before returning Keon’s many text messages and voicemails. But once the two got together, their chemistry was undeniable. The duo decided to dub their project “speakers” because, as Blair notes, “you need two, a left and a right. We are not one without the other.”

Three days after the release of New Frequency (so named because …”we’re launching a new sound that won’t be limited by existing genres” according to Blair.), speakers will release their video for “And Her Too.” Premiering on VEVO on May 11, “And Her Too” was directed by Cameron Duddy (who’s previously worked with Bruno Mars and AWOLNATION).

And on May 15, speakers will host the New Frequency release show at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles.

speakers will make their second appearance on Last Call with Carson Daly on May 8. Featuring clips from their show earlier this year at the El Rey Theatre, the Carson Daly appearance will include performances of “Right Right” and “Seat Filla.” Click here for a look at speakers performing “Bass” from their first appearance on the show.
