War Horse is the tale of a child and eir companion, a horse. The duo are separated, but the impact that they have on each other continues through World War I. Steven Spielberg’s direction of this film is stellar, meaning that viewers will be transported back in time. A sense of immersion is always present here, meaning that the cast (Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, and Jeremy Irvine) are able to drop their Hollywood identities and seamlessly take up their characters’ mantles. What is surprising is how many actions that the horse that played Topthorn does during the film; War Horse is successful because of the empathy that one can derive from the interaction between horse and man.

The overall production of War Horse means that it looks simply fantastic on whichever format one chooses to watch it. The Blu-Ray makes for a realistic cinema experience, while the DVDs version pushes that technology to the limit. To further increase the value of War Horse, Disney has packed their box set with an incredible amount of material. Those that are moved by the musical arrangements would do well to watch the Editing & Scoring featurette, which provides viewers with a rare insight to the difficulty in creating just the right music for the film. Another solid featurette comes in the discussion had with Martin D. Dew, an extra that gets eir time in the sunlight a few times during War Horse.

War Horse will go down as one of the best films of the last ten years, and Disney has provided viewers with a comprehensive version right out of the gate. Make sure to pick up a copy of the Blu-Ray / DVD / Digital Copy version, which will allow the greatest portability at the cheapest price.
