We were afraid that we were not going to be able to report on the Avicii show, as a ticket snafu threatened to shut out one of our reviewers. However, the staff at the CONSOL Energy Center bent over backwards to ensure that our needs were taken care of. We were able to get in and experience Avicii’s expansive live set from an absolutely stellar position. The design of the CONSOL Energy Center is incredibly smart, ensuring that anyone that was in the front half of the venue had a clear view to Avicii. Avicii’s head set was incredible, with a different setup marking each track. The face itself received tribal markings, supernovas, and fit what was present on the projectors perfectly.

Avicii’s set showcased hit after hit. Rather than just playing the songs that made eir a star, Avicii fiddled and otherwise tweaked each effort to make for a wholly unique experience in Pittsburgh. The hits were all there – Seek Bromance, My Feelings For You, and Fade into Darkness were just a few examples of this. Most interesting during the set had to be the inclusion of the tracks that ey had remixed. To keep the energy level high, Avicii inserted eir take on Swedish House Mafia’s Antidote. I believe that this was a smart idea, as the laser-like focus that ey has as Avicii creates a very distinctive and unitary flair to eir tracks.

The last hour of the set showed Avicii’s skill as a DJ. Providing high energy throughout, there was no track that did not showcase Avicii’s unique stamp. While it felt like a lead out, Avicii’s choice to play Kernkraft 400’s Zombie Nation brought listeners back even towards the end. The live spectacle that is Avicii needs to be seen by anyone that calls themselves a fan.
