Altered Natives on working with Photek:
‘It was a great honour to get the opportunity to remix one of my music heroes. Photek’s drum arrangements and sense of percussion always inspired me when I was younger so it only seemed right in my mind that I remixed his work in my own percussive style. I chose to follow his song’s original structure as I loved the classical feel and progression of the original version plus his use of more organic sound, so I chose to rewrite using less of the original’s parts instead replaying it all with sounds organic/inorganic more familiar to this end of my own production spectrum”
Photek’s DJ-Kicks (released April of this year) has been hailed as one of the highlights of the series. Having hit the road to support the release, including prime slots at the Movement and Together festivals, the legendary producer delivers a new single from the DJ-Kicks album, featuring remixes from Altered Natives and Tom Bulwer.
Altered Natives
It feels almost futile trying to encapsulate just exactly who UK producer Altered Natives (a/k/a Danny Yorke) is. Very much at the centre of the electronic & bass end of the musical game, Yorke is brutally honest and full of emotion. The same can be transferred to his musical output. Releases like 2009’s ‘Rass Out’ and 2010’s ‘The Bitch’ on Martyn’s 3024 we’re met with praise worldwide. But it’s on his Tenement Yard releases on his own label Eye4Eye recordings, where you really start to unravel a sense of what Altered Natives is all about.
As he readies the next Tenement Yard album, there’s a feeling that Altered Natives is about to level up again in the next phase of his musical career, with both mixes showcasing entirely where he’s at right now musically.
2012 marks the 27th anniversary of !K7 Records. The label will be celebrating with a series of live events, releases, and special projects incorporating music and artists from past, present and future of the label, and the DJ-Kicks series.
