Cata9tales – A Chameleon’s Dream (CD)

Kaboombox is a hot bit of electronic-infused rap music. Hints of Korn, Coal Chamber, and Boondox can all be heard during this funky, energetic, and overall fun introduction to Cata9tales. Of particular note during this track has to be the production, which allows the track to stay crisp and compelling through its run time. Open Letter To Generation Adderall provides listeners with a grittier and harder feel, with the narration provided the effort by the vocals matching each note perfectly. The wide array of disparate elements that can be heard here showcase the sheer amount of tools available to the act. Each track could easily be heard on hard rock or alternative stations, but Cata9tales creates a nuanced sound that will give listeners something substantially different with each subsequent spin.

What A Day builds another hit on top of a framework that is constructed from the whole of popular culture; the pointed feeling of the vocals are set off quite nicely by the more twinkling arrangement implemented here.  Ultralife is an amazing track that shatters the conception that the second half of a band’s album has to be significantly weaker than what was on the A-side. Rather, the scratching (Kid Koala mixed with a DJ Premier or a Static Selectah) spins the track off into a Linkin Park style.

There is not a weak track to be found on A Chameleon’s Dream; if you have liked any Cata9tales cut in the past, make it a point to buy this new release. I would like to see how the dialogue that they have with their fans changes in a live format; check out their website for more information about where they will be in the next few months.
