Three Stars is a film that looks to clarify the Michelin ranking system by providing interviews with 10 of the chefs from these restaurants. The list of those that were interviewed during Three Stars is absolutely stellar, including Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Jean-Georges in New York), Nadia Santini (Italy’s Dal Pescatore), and  Sergio Herman (Oud Sluis, from the Netherlands). Rounding out the coverage is a feature with the current director of the Michelin guide, going into considerable detail about the process by which a restaurant is graded. Stars can be granted or removed, so the process of maintaining a restaurant at the highest level is seen as a 24/7 type of exercise. The sheer amount of work done to stay on Michelin’s good side is even greater than I had previously thought.S

Three Stars interviews 9 chefs in total; high notes here include Yannick Alleno (Le Meurice), Rene Redzepi (Noma) and Hideki Ishikawa (Ishikawa). The film provides individuals with subtitles to properly flesh out the content of their beliefs along with providing some information about how these world-renowned cooks make their culinary experience differ from local restaurants and the best of the best alike.

Three Stars can be purchased at a number of online retailers and well-stocked stores dealing with independent cinema. I would like to see this documentary expand to be a full-blown consideration of the Michelin star system and how it is considered by those chefs at lower-ranked (if not unranked) Michelin restaurants. I believe that the overall tenor of the film would be considerably different if a wider array of chefs were interviewed. Check out the First Run website for information regarding the rest of their 2013 slate of titles.
