Philip Glass, Van Dyke Parks and Friends and more at Big Sur Brooklyn Bridge!

The Henry Miller Memorial Library has for years attracted fans of the iconic American writer to its singular locale in Big Sur, where he spent 18 years of his life. Recently, the Library has become a nearly mythic destination for artists including Animal Collective, Neil Young & Pegi Young, the Fleet Foxes, Bill Callahan, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, Beach House, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Philip Glass, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle, Chris Robinson, The XX, MGMT, and many others — and their audiences. Gillian Welch has described the Library as “how things should be — where artists in different genres and mediums all sort of coexist.”

Now, for the first time, the not-for-profit library and arts center heads East for Big Sur Brooklyn Bridge, a weeklong (May 12 – 19) festival in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where Miller spent his childhood. The programming includes readings, art, comedy, music and movies; please see below for a schedule of confirmed events.

The Bridge will be anchored by a pop-up bookstore at the City Reliquary. During the daytime throughout the festival (10am – 6 pm), the Henry Miller Library will display a collection of first- and early-edition Henry Miller books, rare manuscripts, a timeline of Miller’s life with primary sources from each period, Miller’s watercolor paintings and handwritten letters, as well as books, posters and movies for sale.

At night, the Bridge will host a series of events throughout the week, including the Upright Citizens Brigade’s “Tropic of Laughter,” a night of short film with the Brooklyn Short Film Festival.

Big Sur Brooklyn Bridge will conclude with a concert on May 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg: Philip Glass, Van Dyke Parks and Friends.

These events will be curated with help from Philip Glass’ Days & Nights Festival, Brooklyn Brewery, the Allen Ginsberg Trust, Pomegranate Arts, (((folkYEAH!))), and Grove Press, among others.
