Flash Gordon was created in 1934, had a feature film (utilizing a killer Queen soundtrack) in 1980, and made its way onto the Sci-Fi network in 2007 and 2008. The show ran for 22 episodes, and placed Eric Johnson (Rookie Blue, Smallville) into the titular role. Rather than change the fundamental parts of Flash’s identity, those associated with the creation of the show have kept faithful to the source material. What results in 2007’s Flash Gordon is a much-needed revamp to the classic property and a boost to the already peril-fraught journeys of Flash eirself. The cast is rounded out with the inclusion of Dr. Hans Zarkov (Jody Racicot, Newsroom), Dale Arden (Gina Holden, Life Unexpected), and Ming (John Ralston, The City).

Mill Creek has transferred the 22 episodes of the Flash Gordon revival to the DVD format. The shows end up being eminently watchable, aided by a sharp visual and audio quality. The show is able to expand and tweak the mytrhos created by the original 1980 film. This ensures that  the franchise is able to speak with a contemporary audience. The show transforms the exploits of Flash, Dr. Hans Zarkov, and Dale Arden into a more current time, while still having some of the same self-aware feel as the 1980 film.
