Guided By Voices and Built to Spill may by the go-to bands when someone’s trying to sing the praises of lo-fi music, but the New York-by-way-of-Chicago band Kleenex Girl Wonder – just as prolific as Robert Pollard and his boys, by the way – deserve just as much credit for all that’s great about the genre.

Centered around singer/bassist Graham Smith – the one constant in the group – Kleenex Girl Wonder combines whip smart lyrics with short, tight-as-hell indie pop sounds (album opener “Migration Scripts” and “Thelma & Louise” are perfect examples).

Let it Buffer does drag a bit in the middle and gets weighted down from time to time with pop culture references (probably the only album in 2013 to name check Harry Shearer and Tom Cruise). But while it may not be the band’s best release to date – out of an admittedly pretty large catalogue – when the group is on, it’s hard to imagine anyone be able to keep up with them.

Coming in at just under half an hour, the band takes a hit-it-and-get-the-fuck-out-of-there approach, which works impressively well for their catchy brand of lo-fi pop music.
