Jagjaguwar is thrilled to announce the new long-player from Wisconsin-based singer, songwriter, and Bon Iver multi-instrumentalist S. Carey (Sean Carey), Range of Light, out April 1, 2014 (March 31 in the UK). The album starts where Carey’s 2010 debut, All We Grow, left off: near the edge of the canyon, gazing down at the river below but leading from there to the majestic range in the distance, drawing listeners on a new and epic journey through gorgeously-woven orchestral peaks and valleys. The first-offering “Fire-scene” premiered on Stereogum today (http://www.stereogum.com/1634061/s-carey-fire-scene-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/), and pushes Carey’s voice front and center.

S. Carey’s chosen musical expression is a hugely beatific, restorative panorama of beauty – perfect given how landscape and the wonder of nature inspire much of his imagery. “My music has specific connections to nature and place, my surroundings, and my experiences,” says Carey. Range of Light takes its title from the name that 19th century naturalist John Muir – Carey’s hero – gave to California’s Sierra Nevada, and follows suit with a dazzling array of musical light and shade, drawn from Carey’s love of jazz, modern classical and Americana. “I traveled the Sierra Nevada area many times as a boy, fishing small mountain streams, hiking to the top of ‘half dome’, exploring the Redwood groves at Wawona, in awe of the Yosemite Valley. The term, ‘Range of Light’, to me, denotes the spectrum of light and dark a person can have in their life – peaks and valleys of happiness, sorrow, challenges and growth – for me most recently and more specifically: marriage, having a baby, and maintaining a spiritual connection to nature, place, friends and family as an adult.”

Range of Light is now available for pre-order via iTunes, and comes with an instant-grat download of “Fire-scene.” A pre-order with instant-grat is also available through Secretly Canadian Distribution, in addition to a Range of Light deluxe package, which includes limited-edition marble vinyl and a limited-edition “Fire-scene” 7″, featuring exclusive b-side “Chrysalis.”
