Shit got real in season three of Games of Thrones. You know those annoying friends who have already read the books and would not shut up about “The Red Wedding” scene. Well, turns out they didn’t over sell this story line, for once. In the second to last episode in season three, just out on DVD, hell was definitely unleased at the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, and the bodies quickly piled up. While the preceding episodes weren’t nearly as jaw-on-the-floor shocking, this season was much stronger, and even, than the previous one.

Season three continues with the awkward alliances between various entities of the Seven Kingdoms that began toward the end of the last season. The Lannisters are still barely holding onto power after the brutal sea battle, while Rob Stark also holds a weak grip on his influence. But aside from the bloody wedding, the strongest episodes in season three still focus on Daenerys Targaryen and her three dragons (as someone who never cared about Sci Fi and fantasy, that’s a sentence I never thought I would ever have to type). But there lies the secret in the popularity of the Game of Thrones TV series.

Through compelling characters and fantastic writing, they have managed to widely broaden the appeal of the series that could easily have been just another niche cult television show.
