Closing in on the final season of this gripping crime drama (the fifth and last season kicks off in September), the fourth season concludes with some of the best cliff hangers the show has ever had and makes up for a weak season three.

Writers were able to turn in their best episodes since the show’s debut year, with strong plot lines around Atlantic City bootlegger Nucky Thompson (still played brilliantly by Steve Buscemi) forging ties with booze smugglers in Florida, more potential backstabbing from his brother, manslaughter charges against his nephew and the introduction of a new, viscously charismatic enemy for “Chalky” White (Michael Kenneth Williams). Season four also adds in Patricia Arquette, playing Nucky’s new love interest and the strongest female character yet in the show.

The buzz around Boardwalk Empire has quieted down a bit since the show first debuted five years ago, moving on to newer shows, but season four pays off big for the fans that stuck with the series.
