Nick Hakim is now streaming the four-track collection of songs in full via SoundCloud, with previously unheard tracks Sleep and Heaven available for fans to hear. The Brooklyn-based, DC-raised artist has been gaining acclaim for his modern, bluesy take on soul and R&B, with the newest EP coming hot off the heels of this summers Where Will We Go Pt. 1, whose singles Cold and Pour Another put the newcomer on the map.
Having toured earlier this summer with Maxwell and played a month-long residency at Brooklyns Babys All Right, Hakim is an artist on the rise, with Billboard calling him a startling newcomer . . . it sounds like a lost 70s outtake from some forgotten soul genius. Entertainment Weekly compared him to John Legend while NPR wrote, Brooklyn singer-songwriter Nick Hakim makes soulful music that feels lovingly dreamy and hopelessly bleary at once . . . his layered vocals swim across each other and send shivers down your spine. They also offer a free download for the month of September of I Dont Know via Heavy Rotation, a song that Huffington Post writes is another fantastic product from a guy who knows how to write music that anyone can appreciate. KCRW deemed him an Artist You Should Know and noted Hakims sound is, equal parts Rhye, DAngelo and The Beatles While My Guitar Gently Weeps, while New York Magazine advise hear Nick Hakim . . . whose moody, gorgeous voice suits a sweaty summer night.
Raised in Washington, D.C. in a household overflowing with musical diversity ranging from soul, hip-hop, go-go, folk music and more from his Chilean and Peruvian parents, it comes as no surprise that Nick tends to blend genres, mixing the ambient airy sound of psychedelic, with the raw gut-wrenching emotion of the blues. He performs a broad range of the instruments heard on the EP alongside shared production duties, with an early admiration for Marvin Gaye and Harry Nilsson seeping through these introductory recordings. The vulnerability of Nicks vocals, intimate and silken, is a powerful instrument in its own right that never pushes itself to excess.
