Master Drone is the current cut by Canada’s The Unravelling, unveiled on July 8th. The track links together Marilyn Manson, Tool, and Fear Factory into a driven and dedicated hard rock / metal / industrial and gothic mélange. Steve Moore’s vocals cut to the bone, while the dark soundscapes crafted by the guitars and drums during Master Drone will completely immerse listeners. The track shifts and changes over the course of its five-plus minutes; nods to traditional metal acts like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden create considerable depth to the composition. The story told here is similar in richness to Queensryche’s Operation Mindcrime; fans will be picking up every utterance and line to hear precisely what happens.
As Master Drone spins to an end, there is no reduction to the ferocity or changes to the hard-hitting demeanor that began the single. It is dedication to perfecting this work that imbues Master Drone with enough legs to stand up to repeat listens. The double-duty of the vocals here is the catalyst that turns the track into something special. At times Alice Cooper, others Serj Tankian, Moore’s aural assault does more than convey lyrics; it provides additional fullness to the instrumentation of the song. The production on Master Drone allows Moore’s vocals and each of the constituent instruments to shine alone and as a coherent unit. While the track is a shoo-in for rock/metal radio and podcasts, I feel that the lyrical complexity and intelligent arrangements of the effort will appease those seeking out something more substantive.
