There are not a large number of breweries that actively put out beers in the Wee Heavy style, but San Clemente’s Left Coast Brewing has crafted a massive effort in their Get in My Belly. The beer pours with a mahogany coloration and a small amount of off-white to tan head. There is little in the way of carbonation to this effort, while the mouthfeel is thick and luxurious. There is a surprisingly small amount of nose to the beer, urging potential imbibers to take the first sip to be hit with the bevy of flavors that are to follow. There are hints of caramel, raisins, toffee, malt, and spice hiding the bonkers (13.1% ABV) alcohol percentage.Left-Coast-Barrel-Aged-Get-in-My-Belly

The time spent in oak barrels moderates well the sweeter elements, making for a downright dangerous effort that goes down without a second thought. While one can discern the alcohol bite at points, this is one of many tastes that work together to make for an effort that is continually shifting and changing. Get in My Belly is a meal of a beer on its own, but it can be paired well with strong-flavored meats (roasts, barbecue) or Indian / Mexican fare. The beer is extremely stable as it reaches room temperature and would best be served in the 40-50 degree range. Left Coast’s Barrel Aged Get in My Belly would be a must-buy for anyone that is a fan of darker beer styles (aside from Scotch Ales, I feel that fans of porters, stouts, and even dunkels could find something to dig here) and for those that cannot get enough barrel aged beers in their lives.

We have reviewed other Left Coast efforts in the past, including Barrel Aged Asylum Infused w/ Coffee Bean and Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Epeteios Imperial Stout .
