Pygmy Owl Itty Bitty IPA review on NeuFutur.com

Pygmy Owl is a session IPA by Big Sky Brewing that pours with a light yellow to gold coloration and a small amount of white head; no lacing exists when poured from a can. The nose possesses large hints of wheat and dank, oily hop elements, while the initial sip is needed to gain a full appreciation of what the beer brings to the table. This first quaff provides imbibers with a solid amount of wheat, grain, and hay before shifting into a more floral / citrus (lemon, grapefruit) hop taste. The bit of bitterness that is present at the end of the drink is enough to refresh a palette.

Pygmy Owl would be perfectly paired with fish, chicken, or turkey; sushi and white sauces be accentuated by the inclusion of this Big Sky beer. Where the overall flavor profile of the beer is more sedate than aggressively-hopped IPAs/imperial IPAs, the greater nuance that exists here will have one eagerly tasting Pygmy Owl to discern all the twists and turns that the beer provides.

Pygmy Owl is the perfect beer for those that are looking to put their toe into the India Pale Ale style, or for those that want to have a hop-forward beer that does not overwhelm with alcohol content. This offering is the perfect stop-gap between the golden lager / pilsner styles and pale ales / IPAs; Pygmy Owl’s versatility means that it is a perfect inclusion for campfires, parties, sporting events, or any accumulation of people. We have reviewed other Big Sky beers in the past, and were quite fond of the brewery’s Powder Hound 2013 vintage.
