Outlaw Country mainstay Ray Wylie Hubbard has managed to make a career out swimming against the current and not really giving a fuck about what’s best for his career. So while he may not be selling out stadiums like the backwards ball cap sportin’ dudes in the world Bro Country he has managed to live a life that makes for one hell of a memoir.

Front cover only

The book, penned with the help of his friend and music journalist Thom Jurek, is equal parts inspiring, irreverent and laugh out loud funny. The Oklahoma native switches back and forth between talking about his youth and teen years learning to play guitar and discovering the joys (and consequences) of booze, to comical stories about trying to make it as a struggling singer and songwriter. The appeal of the memoir, much like Hubbard’s music, is his self-deprecating style, whether it’s describing a gig playing at The Redneck Games or getting kidnapped by members of Willie Nelson’s band to play at a beer fest in Milwaukee.

Hubbard may not be a household name to many, but he sure deserves to be.
