Thriller is Asheville, North Carolina’s Green Man Brewery’s blood orange saison, part of the brewery’s high gravity series. This saison is an effort that has a vibrant reddish-brown to ruby red color and a good amount of beige head that dissipates in short order. Hints of yeast and malt are married to more barnyard (grassy, hay) elements. The 7.7% ABV of the brew is hidden perfectly among the distinctive flavor profile, which is provided additional complexity and depth through the inclusion of Amarillo hops. The slight bitter elements that can be discerned in Thriller do much to refresh an imbiber’s palette. A set of delicate flavors including spice, citrus fruits, and earth bubble through at points, making no two sips exactly the same.

The array of twists and turns that a bottle of Thriller will take one on ensures that one will be as excited for the offering as they were when they first opened it. While beets are used to give Thriller its eye-popping color, there is a surprisingly small amount of the overall profile influenced by their inclusion (perhaps some of the earthiness can be attributed to their presence). Well-balanced, Green Man’s Thriller is a beer that fans of saisons, pale ales, and Belgian ales can find something to appreciate.

Thriller is available in 750 mL bottles throughout North Carolina for a (very) limited time. Search your local NC bottle stops if you want to experience a high-water mark for the saison style.
