There have been a decent amount of milk and coffee based stouts that have been placed on the market in the course of the last few months and a great many of them are fair to middling. The latest limited time engagement from Colorado’s Left Hand Brewing, Bittersweet is a beer that has a decent amount of twists and turns all while having a luscious and vibrant mouth feel. The initial taste of this effort links together Allegro Coffee’s Mocha Java Blend with milk chocolate and just enough in the way of bitterness to ensure that everything pops. Bittersweet is able to hide its’ ABV quite well amongst the bold flavor profiles that are present here.Bittersweet Imperial Coffee Milk Stout

By only including a smaller amount of carbonation, Left Hand has made an experience that is much more special then a soda like beverage and I feel that this is the perfect sort of companion for those early spring nights. The flavors exhibited here are strong and assertive but are not brash, meaning that one can experience Bittersweet’s bevy of flavors in the beer without being overwhelmed by alcohol notes. Bittersweet opens up nicely allowing for hints of licorice, dark cherry and vanilla to come forth as the beer creeps ever closer to room temperature.

The cohesion of the beer does not suffer at any point meeting that the flavors are still sharp and in focus at later points, rather than developing into a muddy mess. We reviewed Left Hand’s Oktoberfest in NeuFutur late last year and would point our readers to the brewery’s social networking accounts for new product announcements and to their domain for any stats about their year round and seasonal offerings.
