Sara Watkins – Young in All the Wrong Ways (CD)

Sara Watkins has called “Young in All the Wrong Ways” a break up album with herself. “I looked around and realized that in many ways I wasn’t who or where I wanted to be. It’s been a process of letting go and leaving behind patterns and relationships and in some cases how I’ve considered myself.”

Breaking up never sounded so beautiful.

A pretty sharp pivot form her last record, that was a lot sunnier and with a bit more pop influences, her third album is brimming with heart-break and soul-searching, combining some of that genres best influences from Hank Williams and Patsy Cline up to modern alt country bands like the Old 97s. But mixed in with the melancholy are some surprisingly fun songs, like the defiant I’ll be just fine ditty, “One Last Time.” Watkins has a remarkably expressive voice, but just as impressive is her turn of phrase – making her one of alt country’s most underrated songwriters. Witty, clever and poignant, Watkins managed to capture both loss and cautious optimism in equal measure on “Young in All the Wrong Ways.”
