4 Things You Can Do for Your Heart Today

One of the most common misunderstandings that so many people have in terms of heart problems, are that they only happen later in life. While that is often the case, a growing number of younger people are succumbing to heart problems, which is why it is never too early to think about heart health. Whether you believe you are in great physical condition or know that you can afford to lose a few extra few pounds for better heart health, there is no time like today to get started on a heart healthy lifestyle. Here are 4 things you can do for your heart today.

1. Eat a Heart Healthy Diet

There is nothing more important than sticking to a heart healthy diet. However, a heart healthy diet isn’t always about what you don’t eat but a matter of adding foods to your diet that are good for you. If you want to build a strong heart and reduce the amount of plaque building up in your arteries, it is suggested that you include the following foods at least a few times a week:

  • Oily fish (rich in the omega 3 fatty acids)
  • Whole grains
  • Oatmeal
  • Flax and Chia seeds
  • Dark & leafy fruits and veggies (for beta carotene and antioxidants)

Those are just a few of the foods you should be adding to your diet for heart health. You also need to consider reducing the amount of saturated fats and refined sugar that you eat. Neither of those are good for your heart or the cardiovascular system as a whole, so start reducing your intake today.

2. Supplement with Nutrients Known to Be Heart Healthy

If you are not eating the right amount of the above foods, you can also try supplementing with nutrients that are thought to be beneficial to heart health. Cardio care supplements are available. These include omega 3 fish oils, as well as an assortment of antioxidants and vitamins D and K. Supplements are an easy way to ensure your heart is getting what it needs for optimum health.

3. Exercise Regularly

You have heard it said that exercise is what your heart needs to strengthen that all-important muscle. Nothing could be a truer statement but make sure that you do a cardio workout at least three times a week. Also, it is suggested that you speak with your doctor prior to increasing your activity by any significant amount to make sure your heart is healthy enough to handle the added stress of a cardio workout. If he/she gives you a clean bill of health, work up slowly. Don’t start out with a marathon run if you haven’t walked further than from the car to the supermarket in the last 20 years.

 

4. Reduce Stress Significantly

Speaking of stress, this is something you should reduce. Few things are harder on the heart than stress so avoid stressful situations as often as possible and when you can’t, simply take a step back and breathe.

Keeping these four things in mind will promote a healthier heart and what is even better is the fact that they are all things you can do today. It’s never too early to think of heart health so look at your lifestyle today to ensure a longer, healthier life.
