Occurrence - The Past Will Last Forever

Occurrence create a unique form of indie-pop music that touches upon a wide variety of influences over the course of The Past Will Last Forever, their latest album. The Things I’ve Always Liked I Now Hate has the sequencing and futuristic sound of late-nineties performers like Garbage and Stabbing Westward. The haunting sound of My Days and Nights Belong to You include a little bit more Portishead and Liz Phair into the mix. Of particular note during this track has to be a more Spartan sound to this release, where only a few elements combine to create something that is greater than the sum of the constituent parts.

Ghost Free Home succeeds through the creation of a sound that feels influenced by 1960s psychedelic rock, 1990s industrial (KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails), darkwave and early goth (Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy). Usage of a vocal sample as a narrative component for the track is a smart decision. The Sadness Sure Gets Me is a nearly six-minute track that gives Occurrence ample to spread their wings. What results here is a spooky re-creation of a futuristic city. One can imagine this track chosen for a cyberpunk thriller. I Like You More When You’re Stoned concludes The Past Will Last Forever, providing listeners with a fulfilling composition that builds off of the framework of a Midnight Oil or Black Tape for a Blue Girl. The echoing vocal elements that immediately precede each stanza highlight the lyrics to come; the instrumentation does a good job in taking over for these vocals. The dynamic created by the vocal and instrumental units makes for a track that will resound loudly with fans long after the album has ceased.
