We had visited a number of Primanti Bros locations in the past, including their stores in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania as well as Youngstown, Ohio and had memorable visits each time. We were lucky enough to be invited to the original Primanti Bros location in Pittsburgh’s Strip District and were quite impressed with the overall experience. When you first go into the location you will be shocked at the overall level of business that is present.

As the Strip is one of Pittsburgh’s most frequently visited locations, this is no surprise. However what is impressive is the rapidity at which visitors are seated, given their drinks, have their orders taken and receive their food. The overall vibe that is present at this Primanti Brothers is very friendly, with servers and cooks alike making visitors feel as if they were in a family member’s kitchen. Pieces of Pittsburgh-centric memorabilia adorn the walls, a trip back down memory lane that showcases all of the collective victories of the Steel City. Before we knew it, we were served our sandwiches.

I chose Primanti Bros.’ Cajun Chicken sandwich which contains a chicken breast alongside fresh white bread. The sheer size of the sandwich makes it difficult to fit in one’s mouth unless a bit of compression is in order. Even individuals that are hungry after walking down Penn Avenue for an extended length of time will likely only be able to finish one half of the sandwich.

The wife got a Sweet Sausage and Cheese, which married the crispness of the meat with the greater pliability of the slaw, fries and bread. For those that have not visited a Primanti Bros. in their journeys, the slaw is a must-get. I am not typically a fan of most slaws as they are bogged down with mayo, but Primanti Bros.’ own blend is sweet, light, and provides a brightness to the sandwiches that marries together the distinct elements.

Two sandwiches and drinks come in at under $20. This original location affords visits a unique opportunity to visit one of Pittsburgh’s institutions. For those that have been to other Primanti Bros. locations, the menu down at the Strip location differs from the offerings throughout the rest of the chain. Primanti Bros. has locations in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, eastern Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Florida. The Strip location is centrally located for those going to events at Duquesne, Heinz Field, the Rivers Casino Pittsburgh and The Mall at Robinson.
