NOFX – First Ditch Effort (CD)

At this point, you pretty much know what you’re getting with a NOFX record. If not, happy belated birthday! I’m assuming you were just born.

For 30 years, these hilariously juvenile San Francisco punks have been churning out tongue in cheek punk ditties and managed to create an entire subgenre of their own in the process. “First Ditch Effort,” their 19th or so album, is everything you’ve come to expect from Fat Mike and his co-horts: loud, fast punk songs with plenty of witty wordplay, but also with some surprisingly personal lyrics with this outing (“California Drought,” “Six years on Dope”). The saddest/sweetest track here, “I’m So Sorry Tony,” focuses on longtime friend and scene mate Tony Sly, who died in 2012. But those tracks aside, you need not worry that the band has completely grown up. They’re just as goofy and irreverent on songs like “Sid and Nancy” and “I’m a Transvest-lite.”

They may be three decades into their career now, but NOFX are (thankfully) showing little signs of changing things up.
