Mark Reitenga: Unsung

Mark Reitenga’s Unsung begins with The Detroit Blues, an effort that blends a close and cozy sound with a set of vocals that pull from Paul Simon and Dave Matthews. There is a timeless sound to this introductory track, richly playing upon the titular genre and a bit of folk. The track is able to immerse listeners into the unique sound of Reitenga in the space of 2:30.
Are you Waiting is a touching and playful track that links together the sound of Cat Stevens and Harry Chapin. Of the songs on the Unsung EP, it is Are you Waiting that I feel speaks loudest to listeners. The organic and earnest composition will resound loudly with anyone fortunate enough to listen in.

Angels Watching Over Me showcases another facet to Reitenga. The robust beat and intricate dynamic between guitars, the piano, and Mark’s vocals makes for a single that stands up to repeat listens. While this is the longest effort on the Unsung EP, the four-plus minute run time goes by incredibly quickly. There are enough twists and turns present here that fans will continue to pick out hidden inclusions well after their first listen.

The Devil’s Train is another unique contribution to this EP. This track sails on a walking bass line and a rockbilly-infused sound, while there are hints of 1960s country & west and surf rock (e.g. Dick Dale) that come into play throughout. Few artists are able to create a cogent statement about their music with only four tracks, but I feel like I know Reitenga tremendously well even with the album beginning and ending over the course of a fifteen-minute period.
